Week 14 - Calgary

Missions are incredible!
Gosh I dont know where to start!!! haha so much has changed. Transfers are crazy!! So yeah transfers were this week and one of my trainers, Elder Bailey, went to Lethbridge :( I was pretty sad because he is so dang funny and being in a three leg was pretty cool but now since it is just Elder Sanchez and I, I am able to talk a lot more in lessons and practice my Spanish more. Oh and since Elder Bailey left, I have to drive!! So yeah, I am driving now and I was terrified the first day - haha because I have never driven in the city but I am already used to it now and it is soooo cool! All the roundabouts and bridges and then Canada just looks beautiful so I am really enjoying it. We drive a lot because our area is huge because all the Spanish are scattered all over the place. And since I am driving I can't study or sleep in the car any more - haha. The mission work makes you soooo tired, but if you just don't think about it and focus on doing the work and always thinking in Spanish, then you forget about being tired. It is pretty cool. Same principal goes with missing you guys. Like, if I really think about you guys, then I kind of start to tear up because I love and miss you so much. But right now I just got to focus on learning to preach the gospel and learning Spanish. That quote that goes something like "a missionary leaves his or her family for just a short time so that the people he or she teaches can be with their family forever" it really means a lot to me now and it seems like every day that I am realizing more and more and it is hitting me harder and harder that the most important thing to do in this life is to preach the gospel. SHARE IT!
The more I am learning about the restoration, the plan of salvation, the gospel of Jesus Christ, the commandments, and the laws and ordinances of the gospel, and how to teach it, the more I realize how wonderful and rare it is that I have this knowledge and the joy that comes from living what I know to be true, the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. So this week we had some amazing lessons and I will just share one. Elder Sanchez and I are teaching the a great family, they are investigators that we picked up from other missionaries, they have a 1 year old baby. So the couple have been having fights and are not really getting along. So last lesson with shared with them some of the family a proclamation to the world and committed them to read 1 Nephi 8. So this past lesson was super cool because they actually read 1 Nephi 8 and had questions about it! They usually don't keep their commitments so we were surprised and then we got in to it and answered all their questions about all the symbolism of Lehi's dream and it was super cool. Then they were asking questions about the Plan of Salvation and like what would happen to Laman and Lemuel because they didn't want to come and eat the fruit and how we say that we can live with our families together forever but Nephi probably won't live with his brothers Laman and Lemuel in Celestial Kingdom. So that was pretty hard to answer but I believe we explained it well how we have the gift of agency and that we will be judged according to our desires and works and that Nephi could still go down and visit his brothers but his brothers can not live with God in the celestial kingdom. So yeah it got pretty deep and then somehow we ended up sharing Moroni 8 and they loved it so so much. And we told them that just about 1 year ago your baby was living with God and that babies and kids who die before they are 8 get a free ticket to Celestial Kingdom and are saved through Christ because they are alive in CHrist. I wish you all were there to see their faces because they were just smiling and you could feel the Spirit and like see the Spirit working in them. That was definitely the highlight of my week seeing the couple realize and understand how great the plan of salvation is. Then just this morning the wife texts us and says that they are changing and things are going better between them and they want to learn more faster and they will do it!!! So amazing. All because of Lehi's dream in the Book of Mormon.
I have so many other awesome lessons that I want to share but don't have enough time. All of our investigators and less actives are progressing and my testimony is growing so much. I am so happy to be here. I really am. There no other place I would rather be.
I love you guys so much and cant wait to talk with yall on mother's day. I have so many stories to tell. That's so cool that Mason and all of yall were together for a bit. Miss yall :))) but I am so happy here

Week 13 - Calgary

How is it already a week later?
Meeting Elder Christofferson was incredible last Saturday. The entire mission came, all 207 of us all in the Sacrament room of the Evergreen chapel. At the beginning we all got to shake his hand. When I shook his hand I was so shocked by how he is so old but you can just see how much energy and brightness and love he has in his countenance. Then we sang "Sweet is the Work" and it really sounded like angels were singing with us. It was sooooo loud and sounded soooo good. The Spirit was so strong in there. So much knowledge and desire to do good and follow Christ in that room. I will never forget it. Then President and Sister Miles bore their testimonies and it was super cool and when Elder Christofferson spoke, he said that President Miles was his stake president in Sandy Utah and they worked together for 9 years!!! So cool and he said that we can learn a lot from President and Sister Miles and that he learned a lot from his Mission President which was Elder Richard G. Scott. Wow. So cool how the church and the gospel brings people together and we get these awesome relationships and grow together. The thing that touched me the most about his talk and testimony is how important the Book of Mormon is and how it is the pinnacle of all our scripture and without out we could not know if anything in the church was true. Through the Book of Mormon and Bible and the Spirit and prayer we can come to know Jesus Christ and the restoration is real and we have prophets today and Joseph Smith was a prophet and the priesthood is restored and everything. It all depends on the Book of Mormon. Joseph Smith without the Book of Mormon then we have no religion. I knew these things, but hearing from the words of Elder Christofferson in person and knowing that what he says at the pulpit are pretty much the word of God was so cool and really gave me a boost in my desire to share the Book of Mormon. I love it so much and know it is true.
Another thing he talked about was the parable Jesus Christ gave about the talents and it helped me a ton. We should not compare ourselves to others and do the best we can with the talents we have. Are you learning and growing each day? Are you doing your best and coming closer to Christ? That is what matters.
Gosh there is just soooooo much to tell!! This week we had 3 super awesome lessons. I will share the with Adriana and Jordan. They are married and have been investigators for like 9 months and we have been sharing with them Christ-like attributes from preach my gospel because they want to improve their relationship. But this past lesson they just started asking a bunch of questions about baptism and the word of wisdom and the law of chastity and repentance! From what they were saying it sounded like they are getting close to making the choice to be baptized. They were asking stuff like what exactly will we have to do after we are baptized and what if we want to turn away from the church after baptism and what sins are worst than others. So we talked a lot about the Spirit and how you can know if you are doing well and clean if you are feeling the Spirit because the Spirit can not dwell with you if you are sinning and have not repented. At the end we bore our testimonies and I could really tell Adriana was touched by it and she and Jordan both said they feel the Spirit every time we come over.  All of our investigators say this and they say how great it is and then we tell them about receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost and how He can be with you at all times and have the constant companionship with Him but they either say we want to learn more first or not ready to make the commitment or just want to wait. It is kind of hard because I just want them to have the gift of the Holy Ghost and experience all the joy from having and the blessings come from living the gospel. I am patient though. Most of them are progressing and that is what matters. Anyways so after Adriana and Jordan said this we said a prayer then Adriana jumps up and just gives us a big hug haha it happened so fast. Then we told them about the mission rules and Adriana was like - woooow haha. Yeah missionaries have so many rules haha. But I love it and they all are there for a reason.
I love you all and mothers day is really getting close!! Can't wait and hope yall have a great week! I can not believe I have been on my mission for almost 3 months already! I am loving it! Time is really flying by!

Week 12 - Calgary

Alright so I don't have a ton of time so I will just tell a few stories and send pics. So the zoo was incredible and the whole time I was just thinking how God created all these super cool animals and habitats and why he did it. You can find out in Moses and Genesis, so cool. Then this week while me and Elder Bailey were downtown street contacting and we got into a pretty sketchy situation. This guy was smoking and as we were walking by he said "HEY! Come here! (just add a ton of swear words when I say he is talkin) what are you guys doing" and we just say we are sharing with others the joy that comes from living the gospel of Jesus Christ. Then he says to me "wait wait wait hold up so I am poor and uhhh hey gimme your shirt and your tie, what would Jesus do" and then I say I don't think I can and didn't really know what to say - haha then he says "just gimme your shirt and tie" then I say we are just here to teach others about Jesus Christ and then he jumps up and Elder Bailey and I kind of flinched and then he says "nahhh I am just messing with you guys" and then we laughed and he sat back down and we walked away - haha. I have a lot of stories like this and don't have time to write them all.
It is just so interesting how every one in the world knows the name Jesus Christ but have no idea at all what He really is like and what He taught. And it so crazy and cool how all of us choose to have faith in Jesus Christ and come to the earth in the premortal life. Now we have to choose to have faith in Christ in this life and do the things we need to in this life to live with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ again and become like Them.
I have been studying the Atonement and the Plan of Salvation a lot and want you all to too. It is so cool when you realize new things and learn more about it all. And the best part is when you feel the Spirit and you just feel so happy to be a son or daughter of God in His plan and His Son has made it possible for you to be truly happy instead of being miserable or having sad feelings. It is very rare that I ever get sad because I am always thinking about Christ. It is so simple. Read and study the scriptures and pray and think about Christ and go to church and your life will be so awesome all the time. I love it. And I shared this with Miguel y Elizabeth during our lesson with them last week and they said they felt the Spirit and feel that they need to pray more and read more, it was super cool and this Sunday I sat right next to them in Sacrament meeting and I was sooooo happy to be sharing the gospel in Spanish and helping them come unto Christ. I got to pass the Sacrament to them to and it was so so sweet. I feel like we are taught a lot about the sacrament but still dont realize how great of a gift it is. As you study the Atonement and the sacrament we can get a better idea of the magnitude of this blessing. It is so great and incredible.
I am growing closer to Christ every day and am praying more and more and my spanish is still slowly getting better. Some days are better than others with Spanish. Learning a new language is hard but all things are possible through faith in Jesus Christ.
Love you all so much and look forward to Skyping with yall very soon! time is flying by :)

Week 11 - Calgary

General Conference was so amazing!

Alright so I don't have a lot of time to email because we are going to the Zoo! I am super excited.  So I watched half of General Conference in Spanish and half in English. Kind of sums up my mission - haha - because some of our investigators and less actives just want to learn English so we sometimes just speak English. I think it will take a little longer for me to get fluent but it is coming :) I look back last month when I got here and I understand and can teach so much better now. And I really, really loved it in Spanish because I really understood the basics and fundamentals of what they were saying about the gospel and I could just feel the Spirit so strongly. I felt like the focus of this conference was temples and families. The whole time I was pondering how great these 2 blessings are and then in the priesthood session all the talks hit me hard and made me look forward to being a husband and father and growing closer to Christ with my wife and teaching my children and watching them grow.

I am learning so much here about every aspect of the gospel and why we have to be obedient and do all the things Heavenly Father wants us to do because when we do, we just feel so happy every day. I think it was Jeffrey R Holland who said that living the gospel just makes every day magnificent and maravilloso. Hearing that was super cool because pretty much every day in my journal I write how awesome everyday is and how great the feelings of the Spirit are. This week a lot of our investigators and less actives didn't keep their commitments and I was disappointed but yet still happy because I know that my trainers and I are doing our best and all we can do. The gift of agency is real and it is awesome. We are agents that act and are not acted upon. And there is opposition in all things. If we choose to follow God in every way we are truly happy and we don't, we are miserable. Every commandment we choose to follow there is so much happiness that comes from doing so. Every commandment we choose not to keep there is misery and sad feelings that come with it. You can not change the consequences but you can change your choices and who you follow. We can only serve one master. Jesus Christ or Satan. We already choose to follow Jesus Christ in the premortal life and I just think that is so cool. We should continue following Him and doing our best to be like Him and learn of Him. I have been doing this and the joy I feel every day is just so great. Just forget about yourself and figure out ways to help others, your family, your friends, and others. Be nice and be kind. Forget about your pride and have charity, the pure love of Christ and show it.  I think it was in Dieter F. Uchtdorf talk in the priesthood session that taught this principal. Yeah! It was and he had a super funny quote about if there was a perfect women, do you really think she would want you - haha. So yeah conference was awesome and this week some of our appointments were cancelled and some people didn't keep commitments and the work is hard but awesome. I am enjoying it because I am doing my best and growing closer to Christ. I am really taking the missionary purpose seriously.

Everyone needs to come unto Christ. We are so far away from being like Him. Members are no where near perfect. The gospel is perfect but the people who live it are not. Mosiah 3:19. My mission scripture. I remember in the MTC watching "the Character of Christ" by Elder Bednar and he said he still has a long ways to go to become truly Christlike, that hit me hard. Think of how much we have to work on and change. We can do it though through the enabling and strengthening power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ, His grace. We can change if we choose to and pray for strength to do so. I invite yall to change this week and do something really nice for someone this week and grow closer to Christ :)
I love yall so much!!! At the very beginning of conference I started to tear up because I miss seating all together on the couches watching conference together. Such a sweet and awesome memory. I knew y'all were watching it though and know how much God is blessing us so then I just smiled and was happy. I feel so much love from y'all and I read the talk by Elder Bednar that y'all sent me this week and I have decided it is definitely my favorite talk of all time. There were quotes from it in the home seminary book and the Book of Mormon that helped me so much while I was going through anxiety and depression and reminded me how far I have come because of the Atonement, because of Jesus Christ and His church.  I dont think we really realize how blessed we really are to have the gospel in our lives.

Yo digo oraciones cada manana y noche y dar mucho gracias a Dios por nuestro coincemiento del evangelio y nuestra familia.  I love y'all and miss y'all and hope y'all have an awesome week! :))))
